In the fiscal year 2016-2017, Ethiopia attracted 886,800 tourists (up from 468,000 in 2010), generating 3.32 billions of dollars in revenues and creating 297,000 jobs in the sector.

Ethiopia has "a very interesting touristic profile" with plenty of historical and natural attractions and nine UNESCO-protected historical sites. The capital city, and its National Museum which exposes Lucy also attract many tourists.

The government wants Ethiopia to become the 5th tourism destination in Africa, but also plans to use the tourism sector to accelerate the development of the economy, along with a rapid industrialization and other fast-growing sectors such as light industry and agro-processing.
