According to numerous opinion surveys, the European public considers immigration to be one of the most important topics for the EU. However, the debates on migration often fail to take into account the types of migrants that the EU typically receives. Whereas the media tends to focus their attention on irregular migration, and boat migration in particular, statistical data provides a very different picture.

Most non-EU migrants come to the EU legally, and most arrive by airplane and other means of public transport. This is in addition to significant intra-EU migration that occurs mostly for economic reasons.

But who exactly are the migrants living and arriving in the EU? What is the proportion of those who come to the EU to marry or to join their family? To what extent have migrants integrated? And how can we ensure that migrants can effectively address the growing gaps in the EU labour markets? To discuss this topic, the Martens Centre invites you to a paper launch authored by Rainer Münz and Jemal Yaryyeva, which examines migration flow data between 2013 to 2022.
