The European Business Council for Africa

Date: 19-23 September 2022

Ethiopia

From 19 to 23 September 2022, the Africa Association will conduct a business initiation trip on the topic of waste and recycling management to Ethiopia on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. This is a project-related funding measure. It is part of the Environmental Technologies Export Initiative and is carried out within the framework of the Market Development Programme for SMEs. The target group is primarily small and medium-sized German enterprises (SMEs).

Waste management in Ethiopia, as in many other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, is still very underdeveloped. Substantial population growth, urbanisation and the establishment of industrial enterprises are leading to a rapid increase in waste in Ethiopia's cities. The Reppie Waste-to-energy plant in Addis Ababa - the first such project in Africa - incinerates up to 1,400 tonnes of waste per day. This is close to 80 per cent of the waste generated in the city. It thus covers about 25 percent of the city's household electricity demand. First steps on legal frameworks in waste management were analysed and suggestions were made to improve existing guidelines, policies, regulatory frameworks and mechanisms for their implementation.

The aim of the trip is to inform the participants about market development, business opportunities and framework conditions on site in order to get an overview of opportunities, risks and the business potential for an engagement in the target market. The trip combines expert lectures, business initiation talks and project visits and invites participants to exchange experiences with companies and institutions already active on site, among others.

We look forward to receiving your registration by 17 June 2022, taking into account the binding registration deadline. To do so, please send the completed participant declaration to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Should the effects of the global Corona pandemic not allow for a physical implementation on site, the project can be converted to a digital format in consultation with the participants. In this case, the companies' own contributions will be reduced by half.
