The global response to the COVID-19 pandemic: hope or disillusion?

Date: Tuesday 15 February 2022, 16:00 - 17:00 CET
Politico is hosting top EU and African leaders from a variety of public and private sectors to discuss the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the eradication of the virus.
The pandemic has taught a hard lesson to any would-be idealists: that when humanity was faced with the collective challenge of a deadly virus, countries turned their backs on solidarity to put their own people first.
This reality has sparked a round of hand-wringing public health experts. But while European governments called for new global guidelines, rich countries are continuing to brush off guidance from the World Health Organization and back-burner efforts like the COVAX plan to ensure equitable access to vaccines.
Therefore, countries in Africa and other less-developed regions are feeling abandoned by the global health system and starting instead to look at what they can do on their own.

Climate and Energy in the Africa-Europe partnership: Leading the way to the AU-EU summit

Join the Africa-Europe Foundation (AEF) on Thursday 20 January 2022 from 17:00 to 18:30 CET and ahead of the 6th AU-EU Summit for a high-level debate focusing on the critical themes of climate and energy in the Africa-Europe partnership.
To facilitate an open and frank dialogue on key, often contentious, issues between our two continents, AEF is organising three high-level “Talking Africa-Europe” specials focusing on the priority issues of Climate and Energy (January 20), Migration and Mobility (January 27) and Vaccine Access and Equity (February 3).
This debate will build on the aftermath of COP 26, which have left unhappy both climate activists and made African partners keen to address the key challenge of insufficient access to energy on their own continent. By addressing the best ways to take care of ensuring energy transition for all, this debate aims to foster an honest and frank dialogue about the best pathways to energy transition for the two continents and its people, that ensures both access to energy for all and climate concern.
